Position Announcement: Maintenance Specialist I

Reports To: Maintenance Operations Supervisor

Lower Allen Township is seeking a dedicated and hardworking Maintenance Specialist I to help maintain and improve our community's roads, parks, public facilities, and infrastructure. This position offers an opportunity to perform meaningful work that directly impacts Township residents while developing skills in highway maintenance, equipment operation, and public works services. There are currently multiple open positions. Hours required are generally 5 days per week, 7 AM - 3 PM Monday - Friday, shifting to 6 AM - 2 PM in the hotter part of the season. Starting rate is $19.62/hr. with increases for CDL and other skill benchmarks.

Position Summary
The Maintenance Specialist I performs a variety of public works activities involving the maintenance of Township streets, rights-of-way, buildings, grounds, parks, and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include operating equipment, performing manual labor, maintaining athletic fields and parks, assisting with storm recovery operations, and supporting winter snow and ice control efforts. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and may require overtime or emergency response.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain Township roads, rights-of-way, parks, buildings, and grounds.
  • Operate and learn to operate public works equipment such as:
    • Trucks
    • Rollers
    • Street sweepers
    • Front-end loaders
    • Backhoes
    • Other specialized maintenance equipment
  • Perform roadway repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Conduct manual labor tasks including digging, shoveling, painting, and landscaping.
  • Mow, trim, clean, and maintain roadsides, parks, pavilions, and recreational facilities.
  • Assist with athletic field preparation and seasonal maintenance.
  • Support stormwater infrastructure maintenance, sinkhole repairs, and drainage system cleaning.
  • Participate in leaf collection, tree maintenance, and related operations.
  • Perform snow removal, road salting, and sidewalk clearing during winter weather events.
  • Assist with traffic control and work zone safety operations.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Attend required training programs and learn all functions associated with the position.

Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in outdoor environments throughout the year.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of highway and park maintenance practices.
  • Understanding of safety procedures and equipment operation.
  • Ability to follow directions and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and power tools.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies and work extended hours, including on-call assignments when needed.
